Why I sold products on my own website AND Etsy

When I first started selling my ceramics, Etsy felt like a natural place to begin online. Since it was developed for handmade goods, it felt like an easy place to reach people who valued shopping from small producers.

And I still stand by that decision.

Etsy offers a lot of resources for sellers to learn how to sell online, and I always felt pretty supported when any issues came up.

But I firmly believe that it’s in your best interest to build out an online shop on your business website, and here’s why:

You’ll reach a wider audience.

Especially when you’re just starting out, it might be hard to get traffic to your online store. Etsy is a great way to reach people who may never have come across your brand on their own. It can be great exposure to your target audience, and it’s a perfect way to start amassing product reviews that you can use elsewhere.

People love options.

Giving customers multiple ways to buy your products makes it easier for them to complete the purchase. It’s the same reason I always tell my clients to offer multiple payment methods—we all have our own preferences and by making your work accessible on different platforms, you are catering to the preferences of more potential customers.

Some people may prefer the security of buying on Etsy, while others may not. Be helpful to your customers by giving them options!

What about only selling on Etsy?

While Etsy is a great place to start, you will benefit greatly from a native online shop:

You have more control over the buyer’s journey.

On your own website, you can share the information you want to share, wherever you want to share it. Strategically placing key selling points, your USP (unique selling proposition), and other important product information helps you guide customers through the buying journey. You just don’t have this kind of control or flexibility on Etsy.

It’s good for credibility.

Having your own online shop adds legitimacy to your business. Not only is it great for showing off your products and explaining what sets your brand apart, but it shows your customers that you have a legitimate business that’s more than a side hustle (even if it is!).

Increase your revenue with an online shop.
